The Natural Hair program at Drake State focuses on giving you hands-on experience in an interactive learning environment. This certificate focuses on teaching natural hair care, braiding and twisting skills, sanitization, and professionalism. The Alabama Board of Cosmetology requires completion of 210 hours and a passing grade to receive a Natural Hair Styling License. A student can complete the requirements for Natural Hair in one semester.
A graduate of the Natural Hair program can become employed as a natural hair stylist, platform artist, or spa owner. After gaining experience in a shop/salon environment, graduates can build enough clientele to one day open their own businesses. Other opportunities include teaching in a vocational educational setting or becoming a sales representative.
According to Lightcast Economic Modeling, the median salary for a natural hairstylist is $24,492.
