Healthcare Certificates

Drake State health care certificate programs are designed to help students attain entry-level credentials in a variety of health fields. These programs are offered as non-credit (workforce training) or as college credit programs. Some programs may involve theory, lab, and clinical hours. Courses are offered in a traditional, online, or hybrid format.

Medical Administrative Assistant

The Medical Administrative Short Certificate program prepares students for entry-level employment positions in a variety of health care settings, including physician offices, urgent care facilities, and other clinical settings. Medical administrative assistants perform secretarial duties with specific knowledge of medical terminology and medical procedures. Duties may include:

  • Scheduling and confirming patient appointments
  • Billing patients, processing payments, and filing insurance claims
  • Compiling medical records and documenting in the electronic medical records
  • Managing medical files with coding expertise
  • Writing reports and correspondence

Medical administrative assistant earnings

With employment of medical assistants projected to grow 23 percent from 2014 to 2024 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), there is a predicted surge in the number of medical care facilities, and they will need administrative medical assistants.

Certified Nursing Assistant

Become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in just six weeks at Drake State. CNAs care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled under the supervision of physicians, licensed practical nurses, and registered nurses. Our CNA training course fulfills the OBRA (Omnibus Budget Reconciliation ACT) requirements for training of long-term care nursing assistants in preparation for certification through competency evaluation. Emphasis is placed on the development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required of the long-term care nursing assistant. Upon completion of this course, the student should demonstrate satisfactory performance on written examinations and clinical skills. The course will be offered in six-week intervals with virtual and in-person components.

Requirements

  • Provide proof of a negative TB skin test and Hepatitis Series B immunization
  • Provide proof of current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • At least 16 years old

Medication Assistant

The Medication Assistant course fulfills the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) 100-hour Medication Assistant Certified (MA-C) Curriculum requirements for training of nursing assistants in preparation for medication assistant certification (MA-C) through competency evaluation. Emphasis is placed on the development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required of the medication assistant. Upon completion of this course, the student should demonstrate satisfactory performance on written examinations, practical lab, and clinical skills. Completion of this course is satisfactory for candidacy for the Medication Assistant Certification Exam (MACE) through NCSBN.

The theory class may be held on campus or online. Lab will be on campus. Students will complete clinicals in an area nursing home.

Patient Care Technician

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) program prepares students for entry-level employment positions in a variety of health care settings, including long-term care, home health care, acute care, and outpatient facilities. Graduates of the program will earn credentials in Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide, Medication Assistant, and Patient Care Technician certification. Students can stack their credentials and gain certification in Phlebotomy.

Patient care technician earnings

Patient Care Technicians can become employed as a patient care technician, certified nursing assistant, or medication assistant. Students will need to pass a certification examination to become a Certified Nursing Assistant or Medication Assistant.

Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy technicians collect blood from patients and prepare the samples for testing. Most work in hospitals and clinics, but some collect blood for donation purposes. 

Common tasks and duties include:

  • Explaining procedures to patients
  • Comforting patients that might be nervous about needles
  • Taking blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings
  • Drawing blood
  • Applying bandages after blood is drawn
  • Sending blood, urine, or fecal samples to the lab for testing
  • Sterilizing equipment and cleaning workspaces
  • Updating patient medical records

Phlebotomist earnings

Phlebotomy technicians are important members of the health care team and often need to explain the blood-drawing procedure and put patients at ease.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider

Becoming a Basic life source provider will:

  1. Prepare individuals for basic life support in the event of emergency situations.
  2. Recertify health care providers with basic life support certification.
  3. Raise awareness of life-saving measures in disaster situations.
