HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – This summer, middle and high school students can develop new technical skills at Drake State Community & Technical College that could lead to science and engineering careers. Recent Machine Tool, Engineering Design, and Welding bootcamps were so successful that more bootcamps have been added to the lineup.

“These bootcamps provide an exciting opportunity for students to engage in activities related to various engineering-related fields,” said Dr. Marina Kingsbury, Principal Investigator of the Frontiers Engineering Coalition at Drake State. “Students can get a taste of where they see themselves in the future at no cost to their parents.”

Local school kids can begin signing up for these two new bootcamps:

Drones *NEW*
June 25
Ages 14+
Students will learn the fundamentals of unmanned flight, safety basics, overview of FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) rules for drone operation, and hands-on exercises in basic drone operation.

Systems Engineering *NEW*
June 25
Ages 15+
This class features hands-on simulations of rockets and spacecraft to demonstrate STEAM principles in a fun and stimulating day-long adventure.

These free bootcamps are sponsored by NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project. Racially or ethnically underrepresented students (Hispanics and Latinos, African Americans, American Indians, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders) and female students are eligible.
