Celebrating 65 Years of Building Futures at Drake State
April 6, 2026

For 65 years, Drake State Community and Technical College has supported Huntsville’s workforce, partnered with local industry, and helped generations of students gain skills for employment and further education. That history was recognized during a recent visit by U.S. Representative Dale Strong, who joined Drake State President Dr. Patricia Sims, faculty, and staff for a campus tour and a visit to the Leidos Advanced Training Complex.
The visit coincided with Drake State’s 65th anniversary and highlighted the long-standing relationship between the college, community leaders, and the region it serves.
During his time on campus, Congressman Strong toured the Leidos Advanced Training Complex, a facility developed in collaboration with Northern Alabama businesses and industry partners. The center is designed to provide students with hands-on training aligned with current technology and workforce demands.
The facility reflects Drake State’s continued focus on preparing students for careers that support the local and regional economy.

“Drake State is where our community comes to build a future. Support for the college makes it possible to offer programs and resources that help ensure access to education and skills training for people across our community.”– Dr. Patricia Sims, President, Drake State Community & Technical College
Since its founding, Drake State has focused on meeting the education and training needs of Huntsville and the surrounding area. Over time, programs have adapted to reflect changes in industry, technology, and the workforce.
Today, the college offers technical and university transfer degrees, industry certifications, adult and continuing education, and customized training for employers. These pathways help students prepare for employment while supporting workforce development across North Alabama.
Congressman Strong spoke during the visit about the role Drake State plays in strengthening the workforce and supporting economic opportunity in the region.
“Drake State brings together education, business, and industry to create opportunities for people in North Alabama. That collaboration helps prepare the workforce and supports continued growth in the region.”-Dale Strong, U.S. Representative (AL-05)
Partnerships have been central to Drake State’s mission for decades. The college works closely with employers, local leaders, and education partners to ensure training programs remain aligned with workforce needs.
These partnerships help students move from education into employment, often within the Huntsville area, while providing employers with access to a trained workforce. The visit to the Leidos Advanced Training Center highlighted how these relationships continue to shape Drake State’s programs.
Looking Ahead

As Drake State marks 65 years of service, the college remains focused on expanding access to education, strengthening workforce pathways, and supporting the North Alabama community.
The campus visit was part of Community College Month activities that showcase Drake State’s students, programs, and impact. Together, these efforts reflect the college’s long-standing role in workforce and skills development and its continued commitment to serving Huntsville and the surrounding region.
