Student Spotlight: The Importance of Encouragement and Paying it Forward

11/17/2014

J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College is proud to recognize the achievements of alumnus Quanteaus Jones.

Mr. Jones completed his Associate degree in 2009 from the Heating and Air Conditioning Technology (HVAC) program at Drake State. However, before deciding to attend college, Mr. Jones worked with Huntsville City Schools as a custodian. After a couple of years he was promoted to Maintenance Helper while attending classes at Drake State. In his third year of employment, Mr. Jones enrolled in Huntsville City School’s Journeyman Apprenticeship program to become a State Journeyman. He completed the program, becoming a top-level repairman in the HVAC field. Mr. Jones is now the HVAC Supervisor at Huntsville City Schools. He is commended by his supervisor for his level of knowledge in the field, as well as his strong aptitude for leadership.

Mr. Jones describes himself as a leader who encourages his staff, and who is easy to get along with. In fact, the leadership function is his favorite part of his job. “I really enjoy utilizing my role as a leader to set good examples for others, while keeping schools in shape for students and visitors,” states Mr. Jones.

The seed of Mr. Jones’ curiosity regarding the HVAC field was planted by his uncle, who owns his own company. Mr. Jones worked with him before arriving at Huntsville City Schools. His uncle was a very important role model who encouraged him to hold steady when it came to personal aspirations and dealing with naysayers. He would say, “Never let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish your goals.”

In the community, Mr. Jones is always willing to help out when asked. Among the leadership roles he carries out, Mr. Jones serves as Minister of Music and Youth Leader at his church. Like many other Drake State alumni who own small businesses, Mr. Jones also runs his family’s carpet and upholstery cleaning business.

Mr. Jones will be the first to tell you that great leadership abilities don’t just happen by chance. He had great inspiration and support along the way from his faith, family and Pastor. They all encouraged him to set objectives and when things got tough, he was taught to focus on the end result.  Encouragement as part of leadership is a common theme for Mr. Jones, and he is a great example of its importance. As a leader, he is all about paying it forward.

True to his management style, Mr. Jones has words of reassurance for current students. “Don’t give up on your dream, and always set goals.”  Mr. Jones gives special thanks to Mr. Dexter Henry, one of his former instructors at Drake State. Mr. Jones recalls, “Mr. Henry is a great instructor! He made sure you knew your trade and was always very encouraging.” Thus, another example of excellence and the type of quality students, instructors and education that can be found at Drake State.
